Open Build Night at the Makerspace!

Want to take a tour of the Powell Makerspace?  Need some help with a project?  Want to see what other people are working on?  Come to the Powell Makerspace this Tuesday from 6-8pm for our first Open Build Evening.  Create, collaborate, and have fun.  Everyone is welcome!

First Open Build Night

The Powell Makerspace is trying something new this week: an open build night.  The idea is simple, open the Powell Makerspace for two hours on Tuesday nights to let people get together and share their maker spirit!  Maybe you have heard about the Powell Makerspace, but don’t really know what it is and would like to chat with the people who run and use the space.  Perhaps you have a project idea in mind but don’t quite know how to make it happen.  Maybe you have taken a class through Powell Valley Community Education to learn our equipment, but want some more help before you feel truly comfortable.  Or maybe you just want to have a chance to talk with creative people who have a passion for making.  Whatever your reason, come and hang out with us tomorrow night for the first of our Open Build Nights!  We hope to make these nights a regular occurrence so come out and get involved with the Maker Community!

In summary:

What?  An Open Build Night to share project ideas and stories, and to build a maker community

Laser Cut Art Demo with Jave Yoshimoto

This Monday, April 30th Jave Yoshimoto, Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska Omaha will be at the Powell Makerspace to give a demonstration of the technique he uses to create wonderful laser cut art.  Professor Yoshimoto has worked with Fablabs and Makerspaces in several locations to create relief laser cut sculptures.

Professor Yoshimoto presented an art show at Sheridan College earlier in April and is on his way to Jackson for an artist’s residency during the month of May.  He reached out to the Powell Makerspace and offered to make a detour to our space to show us how he makes such incredible works of art.

The demonstration will be from 4pm to 8pm, Monday April 30th and will guide students through his process of using photo editing software such as Photoshop and Illustrator to prepare files for the laser cutter.

Space will be limited so we encourage anyone who is interested to let us know by phone or email so we know you are coming!

We hope that Professor Yoshimoto and the knowledge he brings with him will inspire many artists our the community to make use of the Powell Makerspace’s resources and try their hand at these laser cut sculptures!

Success: Powell Makerspace Open House

Event Success

This past Saturday, the Powell Makerspace held its second open house in celebration of our two year anniversary that is coming up in February.  We had more than sixty-five visitors take tours of the space and they all seemed quite impressed by what the Makerspace has to offer.

We had some great conversations and people asked questions about all aspects of the Powell Makerspace.  There were people interested in the 3D printers, the laser cutter, the commercial kitchen, the robotics team, and more!  We hope to see all of these people coming back to the space and getting involved in projects of their own.
